In spotlight : "Facebook Local", re-branding 'Events' for iOS and Android

An year ago, Facebook launched "Events" as its standalone app with a view that it'll help people finding evening hangouts more convenient. It however wasn't a very great hit, so you'd be forgiven if you haven't really heard of it. This time, however, Facebook is now prepared to relaunch the app so that it'll bring bars, restaurants, local businesses and nearby attractions to your attention calling it as "Local from Facebook" or simply "Facebook Local". Facebook believes the goal of the product is to basically make it easier to quickly look up information when making plans with friends.
It appears to be a direct competitor for Yelp. You can download it now for iOS and Android.

What's New in the version

  • Browse timely guides to find events, places and things to do by category.
  • See event invitations one hasn't responded to at the top of the calendar.
  • Explore Local lists of recommended events and places in more than 60 cities.
  • Ability to search for events, places and activities nearly or in another city or neighborhood.

The new App appears to be something like this:

Facebook's new mission is "Bringing the world closer together" and few things do that as vividly as night-life. The company has often been criticized for supposedly isolating people, but there is no replacement for Facebook Events. Mostly when I hear people considering deleting their Facebook accounts, its Events they stay for.By bundling these with local business listings, Facebook is finally gonna give Events the spotlight they deserve.
