JIO now set to bring Payments Bank to your phones!

JIO, the name itself brings a big smile to the face of every Indian trying to digitalize himself in this race of being modern. This name has literally made life easier for majority of people in India. What just started as a mobile network operator and a 4G broadband service, went further giving us Jio apps, Jionet Wi-Fi, affordable Jio 4G smartphones and now is all set to launch Jio Payments Bank.

This is going to be a joint venture between Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) owned by Mukesh Ambani, with 70% and State Bank of India with 30% partnership. Reliance Jio has already secured the payments bank license from RBI in March when it completed its 100 million customer mark. The launch of the payments bank was first expected to coincide with that of the 4G-enabled Jio smartphones in October but a few things came in the way.

“The RBI wanted to be sure that the payments bank is fully compliant with all the regulations and is able to service its customers efficiently. The demonstrations are being made to assure the regulator that the standards of customer service will be sustainably maintained,” a Jio official said on condition of anonymity.

The payments bank is, however, not the core focus area of the company. At present, they are spreading out their Jio phones to the rural areas and the service already provides network in the remote areas. With this, anyone with just an Aadhaar Card will be able to open up an account in the Payments Bank and this will thus allow customers to avail several banking facilities by just using their smartphones and not needing to physically visit a bank. So, association of each of these two magnanimous partners will help in expansion of their customer bases.

The bank is all set and likely to begin its operations in December this year.
