AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) bids Goodbye after 20 years!

Communication is the key, so it has been forever said! And Internet has played a major role in bringing the world together!

Even before WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter made it to our smartphones, AIM, AOL's hugely popular instant messaging service dominated the desktop screens all over during the late 1990s and early 2000s. However, with the change of times where just a screen name or a contact number is enough to make messaging easier, this now ancestor of all applications will be officially shut down on December 15, 2017, where the running little yellow man is going to complete its 20 years since 1997.

The official statement issued by the company says,"AIM tapped into new digital technologies and ignited a cultural shift, but the way in which we communicate with each other has profoundly changed. As a result we’ve made the decision that we will be discontinuing AIM.”

This messaging platform has provided a first hand experience for social media interactions to many back in the time and the news had made people express sadness, nostalgia and even surprise that it still had an existence when its competitors like MSN and Yahoo messengers were shut down way back.

Commenting on the same, Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a public Facebook post on Saturday,
“I developed a lot of empathy for the nuances of how people expressed emotions and ideas online, and I became very focused on improving how this worked”. He further added, “For example, I didn't like that I had no control of whether AIM told my friends I was active online, because sometimes I just wanted to code without being interrupted unless someone I really wanted to chat with signed on.”The post clearly shows where he drew his inspiration from and since he is Zuckerberg, he actually managed to improve.

However, as goes a post on twitter:
After 20 years, AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) is finally shutting down.

RIP to the birth place of wild screen names, ASL, chat rooms, and not having to leave your house to talk to strangers.

GoodBye AIM!
